This short essay response (Journal Entry) is an opportunity for you to engage with the material and consider its relevance to real ethical issues you are interested in (big or small!). The purpose of this assignment is to experiment with the ideas in the texts we read and, importantly, to start coming up with ideas for your final paper prospectus which will ask you to describe a normative ethical theory and consider how it could be applied to concrete ethical decision making. Your entries should be no more than 150 words. Points will be taken off if longer than 150 words! Your short essay should connect one of the readings for that week to a contemporary or everyday situation that you think is relevant. In short, I am asking you to apply the reading to an ethical situation that interests you or came to mind as you were reading. Below your journal entry, you must also include a works cited entry for both texts in that week’s reading.
The first reading for this week is Immanuel Kant, The Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals. SECTION II (4:406-4:425).
The second reading for this week is Rae Langton, “Duty and Desolation” PP. 481-505.
