The ubiquitous statement “white cube” is used as a moniker for galleries. But the term enforces an ideology that keeps visual art separate from society. Using a specific gallery and/or grouping of art on the fourth floor permanent collection galleries at MoMA (which represents the apex of the “white cube” years) consider how curators and designers today are complicating the concept and opine about the style-ideology that has replaced it.
As part of the paper, be sure to define “White Cube” by referencing O’Doherty, and for additional context consider the histories of modernism we explored in Mary Anne Staniszewski and in our foray into modern architecture.
For inspiration consider including additional voices into the paper: MoMA has been collecting interpretive reflections from artists and from curators. She what they have to say about the artwork in the collection from 1940s through the 1970s.
