Chapter 9 pp. 376-393 (Appelrouth and Edles 2021)
Please respond to this resonse by a peer with a couple sentences
1. Structural functionalism was influenced by Talcott Parsons and Robert K. Merton’s writing.
Structural functionalism dominated American sociology from the 1930s to the 1970s it was made so by Talcott Parsons and Robert K. Merton.
This theory emphasizes how society functions, Structural functionalism believes that society has a social structure of its own, that is made up of different systems that work together to keep society stable. Each system has a significant part that contributes to making society whole.
4. Pattern variable: This was written by Parsons and Edward Shils. Pattern variables include 5 sets of alternatives that apply to individual and collective levels. This reflects Durkheim’s theory about Mechanical and organic solidarity in modern and traditional society. Pattern variables are a contrast that describes types of action individuals or groups must choose in every situation. The actions are made by three systems such as personality, cultural, and social. The first one is affectivity/affective-neutrality. Affective action has to do with getting our emotional desires satisfied. Affective- neutrality is when we suppress our emotional instincts. The second one is self-orientation/collectivity-orientation. Self-orientation is self-explanatory. It is when people choose the action that best benefits them and their interests, and collectivity orientation is when people choose the action that best benefits the collectivity. The third alternatives are universalism and particularism. Universalism is an action that is based on general standards and moral rules. Particularism is an action that is based on prioritized attachments that an individual or group places on a relationship or a certain situation. The fourth alternative is Ascription and Achievement. Ascription is an action that is based on given attributes such as race, sex, age, etc. Achievement is an action that is based on our performance. The last alternative is specificity and diffuseness. Specificity action is based on a specific role that we have, diffuseness action does not have a specific guideline, it is more open. 5. I did not know about pattern variable before reading this chapter. I have to say, it really helps me to understand the actions and decisions that we as a society take. Now I know what they are based on, and what influences our actions.
