Write a Disaster, Sports, and Weather Report Paper. Length should be between 500 and 600 words, double spaced, Times New Roman font, 12-point font, one-inch margins, basic MLA format, no heading.
This assignment should be you reporting about what news is going on around you from one of these beat topics. You will write about one topic- one disaster, or one weather report, or one sporting event. Write it as a newspaper article published in this week’s newspaper, using the 5 W’s and inverted pyramid format, and with a strong lead.
This week you will need to use your research skills. You will need to rely on primary sources to write your article. If you are covering a sports event, then you need to watch that event and the press conference that follows. If you are covering something related to the weather, then you will want to go to the NOAA website or other weather sources. If you’re writing a disaster report, you want to find primary sources- maybe it is NOAA, a press conference, or a press release. One way to find these primary sources is to find an article for your topic and then find the primary sources they used and then you go to that source.
Within your document you need to provide links to the sources you used (when you use them) and a works cited page.
Also, make sure you fill out and submit the News Writing Planning Strategy Sheet that is available in the Course Content section, above Session 1. You can save the form and your assignment as one document. Not submitting the NWPSS will result in a loss of 15 points.
2. For this week’s Discussion Board question, compare and contrast at least three ways the media covered a weather event, sporting event, or disaster event. I’d encourage you to include how something showed on social media for any of the three (Try Twitter and make sure you look at a Twitter account by a news media outlet- ABC, CBS, etc.). Also, think through how our Biblical worldview should influence how information is presented in the media even for sports and weather/disaster events. What historical Biblical principles should guide how these stories are written and presented? If you need help thinking through this you can look on websites like Samaritan’s purse to see how they write about weather and disaster events.
In roughly 400 words, talk about the similarities and differences between these three media sources and how they covered this event.
