1. Make a list of all of the different groups in your social world. Then label each group making sure you have at least one example of a primary group, secondary group, in-group, out-group, and a reference group. Now write the instrumental and expressive functions of each group next to the group. Now, list your status in each groups and describe your role.
2. What are social networks? Are they social groups by the definition of social groups? How has the internet changed the nature of social networks?

1. Revisit your graph from M1 Assignment 1. Create a hypothesis about poverty and incarceration rates where the unit of analysis is the state. Write out your hypothesis identifying the independent variable, dependent variable and unit of analysis.
2. Test your hypothesis by taking a sample of states with the highest poverty rates (At least 8) and choose a sample of 8 states with the lowest poverty rate. Create two tables. Each table should include the U.S. as a heading in the first data point. Table One has a sample of 8 high poverty states and TableTwo has a sample of 8 low poverty states. In a column next to the states, add the poverty rates. Now add another column next to the poverty rate column and add the incarceration rate of that state. You can use data from the Prison Policy Initiative. Was your hypothesis supported? Explain.
3. Read the following article: Welfare Misuse Scandal highlights Wealth Divide in Mississippi published by PBS. Write a reflection essay about the type of crime committed. Where does Mississippi stand in terms of poverty rates? How much welfare money does a single mother with 2 children receive? How much money is given to Mississippi from the federal government to use for welfare? How much money was stolen? Reflect. 350-450 words.
