Research/choose a company or person that you want to inquire about an internship, job opportunity, or networking opportunity with
Draft a letter to send to them (cold communication) – It can be sent directly to a specific person that you want to write to OR to the human resources department at the company you are interested in working for if you don’t know a specific name to use
Follow the formatting for a business letter:Use 12-point font (Times New Roman or Calibri) and ensure your paper is left aligned with a right ragged margin
Your letter should be single spaced and have standard margins (1″ on all sides)
Ensure you have an address block at the top of the letter
You do NOT need to have a logo at the top of your letter as it has in the example. This would only be utilized if you worked for a company and needed to write the letter on official letterhead
Use a proper salutation and closing
Ensure to leave spacing as if you were going to physically sign your name between the closing and your typed out name at the bottom of the page. You do NOT need to put an electronic signature on the letter but leave enough room so that it would fit between your closing and your name
In the body of the letter, speak to your qualifications/skills and why you think you would be a good fit for an opportunity with their company
Don’t forget to include information about how the company can reach you –your phone number, email address, etc.
This letter is due at 11:59 PM on Monday, October 2nd – submissions must be received in this dropbox by that time in order to be considered on-time submissions. Any paper submitted after that time will automatically lose one letter grade per day late.
