Learning Goal: I’m working on a art writing question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.
Chicago Style, 500 words
you will do two pre-write exercises (which will count towards your word count) and create a 50-word bio and 300-word minimum short summary about your art. Make sure to include 2-3 photos of the work you discuss, and cite your own pieces (and anything you used as reference to create them) in your bibliography using the Perdue OWL Citation Generator linked in Module 0 to format.
PRE-WRITE 1:
Set a timer for 5 minutes. Make a list of words that could potentially describe your art. Do not censor yourself — if the word comes into your head, write it down without judgement. You are not allowed to hit the delete button while doing this. Use spell check to correct when the timer goes off.
From this list, select the top 8 words that you think best describe your art. Order them in a list, with #1 being the word that best represents your art.
PRE-WRITE 2:
Write a “Twitter Bio.” The social media platform Twitter only allows 180 characters (note that this is letters, and not entire words) for posts on its platform. Write an artist’s bio in 180 characters or less. If you opt to use emojis, include a screen capture.
50 WORD BIO:
Use your Twitter bio to create a 50 word expansion from your Twitter Bio.
PRACTICE SUMMARY:
Using your top 8 words (and any other words from the list you feel are useful), write a 300+ word summary about your creative practice (whatever it takes to get the document to 500 words total.) If you don’t feel like you have a good understanding of your practice at this stage, that’s okay. You can talk about a body of work, or how you relate to an individual piece. Some things you can talk about (but are not limited to) are:
What made you decide to become an artist?
What are your goals and ambitions as an artist?
What materials and processes are you drawn to? Why?
What motivates you to make specific kinds of work within or your practice?
What direct influences did other artists or cultural elements have on your work? Do you feel like the piece you made is in dialogue with these artists/events? If so, why?
Are there any pertinent social or cultural issues tied to this work that the viewer should know about?
Anything else the viewer of your work should know?
