For this week’s material discussion, I’m going to leave it very open-ended. Please share a time, example, moment, or situation where you were surprised to learn that a major change to the way many people live their lives changed because of a local policy change or a neoliberal example of privatization.
Do still include at least one of the sources from this week, with proper citations, and if you can take the opportunity to bring this into conversation with your topic and place. If not, you can develop a completely different topic 🙂
Ok, I’ll go first:(prof’s example)
This week, I learned from one of the students in this class that Miami-Dade County used to have a successful public transportation system, then they were bought by a large private company and basically run down. So it made me think… if this was something I wanted to write about, what would I do? I’d start with what I can find out about this kind of privatization of public transportation systems. While on one hand, this seems crazy, on the other hand, it really makes me think about what parts of this story are true, what is an exaggeration, and what is basically just the obvious outcome of neoliberalism, urbanization, and the growth of mega-companies who influence local politics.
