Analytical Journal Guidelines
An ANALYTICAL JOURNAL is your place to reflect upon the material discussed in our lectures; it is your place to reflect upon the reading assignments, to ask questions about the issues they raise, to agree with the points to bring up, to challenge their ideas, to expand on them – to, in a word, THINK. The journal is also your place to practise your translation skills, to experiment rendering different short passages into your target language (English) and to expose you to a wide variety of texts.
In your journal reflections, you are to think about at least three reading assignments from the previous weeks. These reading assignments can be from any of the weeks prior to submission, so, for the first journal, you can select three readings from Weeks 1 – 4, for the second journal, three readings from Weeks 5 – 8 and, finally, for the third journal, any readings from Weeks 9 – 12. The most important thing is that you discuss and reflect upon three readings in each journal.
Grading: because this is a reflective journal, I will not be grading you based on how well you write, your grammar, etc., but rather on whether you have engaged with the reading assignments or not. Your language may be informal, it can be in English or Chinese. The structure of a journal entry should be, first, a summary of the reading assignments you have chosen to think about, then your own personal thoughts, questions, arguments, etc. There is no set word limit, but to demonstrate ‘thinking’ you will need more than a few sentences. Think of a paper abstract that is often about 250 to 300 words; this can be the general basis on which you strive to reach for each of the readings you reflect upon, then multiply that by three (300 words per reading assignment, three readings in each journal = 900 words per submission).
Each journal entry is worth 8pts, with the assessment totalling 24pts of your summative grade. This should be an easy set of points to get, IF, OF COURSE, YOU DO THE READINGS AND THINK ABOUT THEM. If you do not, well, you know the outcome.
