Instructions
This assignment supports the following objective:
Facilitate compliance with employment laws.
Scope
of practice for Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) is determined at the
state level. In many states, CNMs may practice without supervision of a
physician, while in others, physician oversight is required. Over the
years, the topic of hospitals employing CNMs has been a controversial
issue. Concerns of liability for the facility, the CNM, supervising
physicians, as well as compliance with scope of practice laws, are all
part of the equation. For this assignment, you will research the
benefits and risks, from a legal perspective, associated with a hospital
employing CNMs for a Labor and Delivery unit.
Prepare
an executive summary, suitable for review by Herzing Hospital’s
leadership team. Your executive summary should include a recommendation
to either employ or not employ certified nurse midwives (CNMs) within
the hospital’s Labor and Delivery (L&D) unit. A concise summary of
your research and analysis must accompany the recommendation.

Helpful information about writing an executive summary
An
executive summary is a concise version of a lengthier document. In this
case, the lengthier document would be a full report demonstrating
research you conducted on employing CNMs. An executive summary is the
first thing a person reads when they review a full report document. It
is beneficial to keep your executive summary brief, to-the-point, and it
is acceptable to be persuasive in conveying a position or viewpoint.
Remember, readers are often pressed for time, so you need to capture
their attention quickly, and engage them to keep reading.
