The weekly Material Discussions should be formatted like an annotation. These posts will become critical portions of your final paper, so take your time developing these posts and you will be in great shape once you start putting the paper together.
Annotations should be 300 to 500 words in total. So, for example, if there are two readings, think 150 to 250 for each source.
If you are having trouble getting started, consider the following prompts (you do not have to answer all; these are here to help you get started):
The main concepts for this week include environmental studies (Mittman, 22017; Sze, 2020), political ecology (Neumann, 1998), novel strategies for addressing the Anthropocene (Lorimer and Driessen, 2014), and animal geographies (Hovorka, 2017; Stoddard and Hovorka, 2019; Johnston, 2021).
In response this week, tell me what you think about the histories of “National Park Systems” and the way that intersects with this idea of controlled areas of “rewilding”.
Think about questions like
How does the national park model history impact the way national park areas are currently being managed?
If “wilderness” has been, as Neumann (1998) argues, has been a colonial idea imposed upon lands through displacement and colonialist interests, how can there be such a thing as “rewilding”?
Do you think human intervention is warranted in a “rewilded” space when the animals fail to thrive? Why or why not? And what does this mean about the concept of “rewilding” itself?
How could you link the concept of neoliberalism to the national part model?
How could you describe the global spread of the national park system to what we have been talking about regarding global infrastructure (travel, mobility, control of resources, tourism)?
What do you think about the concept of the “Anthropocene” now that you know even these “wild” spaces of national part systems are also heavily impacted by human activity and control?
