This essay will actively cross-read a book, a play, and a third work as a means of illuminating a theme, thesis, idea, or important figure relevant to Realism and Naturalism. The three works must include:
• A book, Ibsen’s Heroines
• A play, the seagull (chekhov)
• An additional book, play, visual artwork, musical composition, or substantial
critical work of your choice (it may be from the syllabus, but does not have to be; any culture or historical period is acceptable)
The review essay is a mainstay of periodicals such as the New York Review of Books, where examples may be found.
