This is a discussion post 350-400 word count.
I’ve heard the following statement attributed to Billy Sunday: “I have gained the world, but lost my family.” Whether it is a genuine quote or note, the sentiments should be jarring for Christian leaders.
Billy Sunday was a successful evangelist—who ultimately left a legacy of family failure.
William Carey translated the Bible into approximately 37 languages—his translation of the Bengali Bible is still used today in Bangladesh (much like the KJV is used here in the states). However, his marriage was not what any of us should aspire to as we love our wives like Christ loved the church—or respect our husbands like the church respects Christ.
Adoniram Judson lost two wives and several children on the mission field—his life is tragic, but is tragedy bad?
John Wesley likely should have gotten married to his first love, or even his second, but the woman he married he did not love.
For this discussion assignment, I want you to synthetically analyze these leaders and their families/marriages. This means you are not to analyze them one-by-one, but to coordinate your analysis into major themes and bring these themes to salient statements/observations/conclusions.
Here, you should focus on the mission and calling of these leaders, and how their mission and calling impacted their family and their marriage. The goal here is to draw some applicational practices for leaders who want to rightly prioritize their family and their marriage. But, as you do this, be careful not to make the mistake of presentism—which unfairly judges the past by standards of the day. It would be wise to make sure to use headings throughout your discussion assignment to demonstrate proper segmenting of the response.
