Check photos for complete instructions. First:In the previous assignment you looked for deficiencies in each of your 10 articles (focusing mostly on the Method section of the studies). Now we are going to focus on what scientific conclusions the previous studies actually found, which means that you will focus on the Discussion sections of the previous research studies.
What I would like you to do for this assignment is to write a paragraph for each of the 10 articles (so 10 paragraphs in total) that you are reviewing, describing what the authors found overall (the findings of the study). Here’s a sample from happiness research–your sentences will cover your topic for the semester (Perfectionism):
Smith and Jones (2012), found that greater happiness was related to greater intimacy in friendships. In addition, they found that females were slightly happier than males. Finally, they found that greater happiness was related to greater income, but only until respondents earned approximately $75,000 per year–income greater than that was not related to increased happiness.
Notice that although that paragraph above might look a little intimidating at first, it really is made up of just three conclusions that I found that the authors presented or claimed– (1) that happiness was related to greater intimacy; (2)
Females were happier than males; and (3) Happiness and income were related, up to a point.
Each of these conclusions will be presented in the Results section, but it will often be couched in statistical terms, which can be confusing, so for now, I suggest you skip the Results section. But those same findings will be discussed (without the statistical information, usually) in the Discussion section, so I suggest you go straight to the Discussion section of each of your articles and find two or three findings or conclusions (often conveniently labeled as Hypotheses), and then describe them in a fashion similar to what I did above.
In the end, your assignment will have 10 paragraphs like the one above–one for each study. Happy reviewin
!Second: do will just review previously published research studies, looking for possible deficiencies in the most common areas.
So, over the next few days, I would like you to do the following (I provide example wording below in Italics. I use the topic of Friendship, but you would substitute Perfectionism.)
Read and review 10 empirical research journal articles (SAVE the PDF version of each article, because you will need to refer to them again!). Review and take notes for each article in the three following areas:
Sampling – – What group of participants did the researchers use in the study and how did they get them to participate-do you feel that the group is representative of the population of interest? (the population of interest might be all humans, all Americans, all adolescents, etc., and whatever it is, the sample should be representative of it);
Measurement — How did they measure the variables or constructs in the study–does the measurement seem reasonable or valid to you?
Constructs – – Is there a construct that you believe is important in understanding your topic that is not reflected in the study?
Example:
A
Article 1 – Smith, J.B. (2018). Friendship in college. Journal of Educational Psychology, Volume 14, Pages 353-376.
Sampling: The study used college undergraduates who were enrolled in a Psychology class, although the population of interest seems to be all people in general. This would seem to weaken the validity of the findings because college undergraduates may experience friendship in a way that is different from other people, because of their age and academic lifestyle.
Measurement: The study asked participants to answer questions on a survey, thinking about previous friendships that had ended. This seems to be a problem for validity because individuals often try to put a positive spin on ended relationships after the fact. A better approach might have been to ask participants about friendships that they were engaged in at the moment.
Constructs: The study didn’t include the construct of closeness of friendships, which seems to me to be a critical part of any study on friendship.
Then do the same thing as above for the remaining 9 articles.
