Concept Analysis Paper
Purpose: A concept analysis is an exercise designed for the student/researcher to become as familiar as possible with a concept (variable). A concept is usually one or two words that convey meaning, understanding, or feelings between or among individuals within a discipline. Some concepts relevant to nursing are health, nursing, managed care, coping, and parenting. A concept analysis is the first step in communicating meanings, understandings, and feelings.

Directions: For this assignment, you will choose a concept that you would like to define and analyze more precisely for use in your clinical practice, or a health care interest you have. This can be a term you encounter with your work or one with which you would like to research and more precisely define. Look for the measurable quality in your topic of interest, problem, or question.
Write down all of the words you can think of which relate to or express your concept.
Ask colleagues to share their understandings of your concept.
Look up the concept in large unabridged dictionaries/medical encyclopedias and list the definitions you feel most closely describe your feelings or thoughts on the concept.
Search the literature for journal articles and books related to the concept to get a sense of the beliefs and thoughts of others in the discipline regarding the concept.
Begin the analysis paper with a short introductory paragraph expressing what the concept is and why it is significant to you and nursing.
Develop your own definition of the concept from dictionary definitions and literature support, including criteria for measurement of your concept in the real world. Example: Table (concept)-a four-legged platform used to place objects on.
Formulate a list of characteristics or criteria that describe the concept in measurable terms so the concept can be measured in the empirical world. Use your definition, your clinical and theoretical experience, research and literature articles, and books to make the list complete.
Example: Concept-Table Characteristics-
Four legs of the same length.
A flat or platform surface horizontal to the floor.
Used to place objects on.
A minimum of 10 quality references will be used in this 5 page paper, exclusive of title and reference pages. Use the following outline to guide the development of your paper.

Introduction (10 points)
Include the aims and purposes of the analysis
Justify the concept and its significance to nursing knowledge
Defining the Concept (20 points)
Describe the general derivation of the concept and its definition from common usage and nursing usage
Synthesize and evaluate a variety of appropriate authoritative sources from the literature most relevant to defining your  concept
Discuss how well the concept is addressed in the literature
Major Attributes of the Concept (30 points)
Clearly identify each major attribute of the concept as succinctly as possible 
Attributes should be an essential, logical element of the concept as defined 
Each attribute is stated in as measurable a form as the abstractness of the concept allows 
The listed attributes comprise all essential attributes of the concept as defined
Discuss any unexpected findings regarding attributes/uses of your concept. Include uses of your concept that you rejected
Discuss major issues you learned about this concept that changed or expanded your prior understanding of the concept 
The Model Case (30 points)
Provide a model case study which included all attributes of your concept.
Include antecedent(s) and follow-up/outcome
Scholarly Writing (10 points)
Include a variety of quality resources that are evidence-based
Precise APA 7th ed format
Grammar, spelling, and clarity of expression at professional scholarly level
