Purpose: As a WID course, we focus on accepted standards of writing. These standards not only focus on proper grammar, but, also, proper citations, relevant content, logical arguments and even “voice”. Less than a year ago, a new application called ChatGPT was made available OpenAI that is meant to mitigate this writing process. This assignment is to help students become familiar with ChatGPT by giving them an opportunity to assess strengths and weaknesses both for themselves and in the application.
This assignment will require that an introductory paragraph be written by ChatGPT using a prompt and, then, that paragraph will be analyzed using sociological writing best practices.
Requirement:
1. Due: Sept 18
2. Become familiar with OpenAI’s ChatGPT : https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/ and sign up for an account. Note that you will need to include a phone number.
3. When you have an account, enter the following prompt:
 Write a title and only an introductory paragraph to an essay that will analyze the following statement using theories of convergence: “How can theory be used to help explain the concept of ‘tradition being invented’”.
4. Take what is produced by AI (30 points) and do a one page (about 300 words) analysis (written by you and not an AI) using pps 86-95 in our Writing In Sociology book. You can “repurpose” the checklist on page 95 (since it is pointing mainly to a research paper rather than a paper that is making a conceptual argument) help guide in answering the following (70 points) –
a. (35 points) What are your overall thoughts on the paragraph that was produced – length, style (does it reflect how you write?), clarity, logic, is the title good, is the main statement included (point to it), are key terms included, are key terms defined,
b. (35 points) Would you feel confident in turning the AI generated paragraph for a grade given the specific prompt? If so, what is the basis of your confidence and what kind of a grade would you imagine you would make? If not, why not? Would you have any suggestions on what can help the AI paragraph come out better? Or any ideas on how the AI could be helpful to you in future writing?
5. Put the AI generated paragraph (30 points) and your own reflection/analysis (70 points) in one document and submit.
