The Institute of Medicine (2010) defines a “Clinical Practice Guideline” (CPG) as a “systematically developed statement to assist practitioner and patient decisions about appropriate health care for specific clinical circumstances.” Specifically, evidence-based CPGs are a series of recommendations on clinical care, supported by the best available evidence in the clinical literature. CPGs are developed by panels or groups of experienced or expert individuals who synthesize evidence and the strength of the evidence toward the development of recommendations for clinical practice. According to the National Guideline Clearinghouse, sponsored by the Agency on Healthcare Research and Quality, guidelines are intended to identify generally recommended interventions to be considered by a knowledgeable health care provider.
It is believed that the application of the techniques of evidence-based medicine to CPG development can greatly reduce the role of opinion and minimize bias, thus leading to improved guidelines for clinical practice. Evidence-based CPGs are thus superior to nonevidence-based CPGs and can improve health care and patient outcomes.
