Randomized controlled (or clinical) trials (RCTs) are often found in the medical literature, but less often in the nursing literature. RCTs are typically experimental studies in which subjects are randomly assigned to groups, with one or more groups receiving an experimental treatment while one group serves as the control group. RCTs usually involve large diverse samples (ideally in more than one setting). They represent advanced testing of interventions, but not all experimental studies are RCTs. Because of the randomization, an RCT has high internal validity, so the researcher can draw conclusions regarding the effects of treatment and determine the appropriate application for clinical practice.
This discussion is designed to equip you with the competencies to rapidly appraise experimental research for use in bedside patient care. After this discussion, you will be able to:
Identify an RCT research study related to a health or clinical problem of interest.
Critically appraise the selected RCT based on the Rapid Critical Appraisal Checklist for Randomized Controlled Trials.
Discuss how the results of the study are clinically relevant.
Follow the instructions below to complete the discussion. See the Course Schedule for the due date.
Conduct library database searches to find and correctly identify an RCT research study article related to a clinical problem of interest. Be sure not to select a systematic review of RCTs because this will make the assignment very difficult.
Post the APA-formatted reference of the RCT article you selected on the Discussion Board.
Briefly answer the following questions about your RCT article:
What is the aim(s) of the study? Are the aims clearly stated?
What were the inclusion and exclusion selection criteria for the study participants?
Were the subjects randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups? How was this accomplished?
Were the researchers, participants, and health care professionals who were involved in the study blinded to the intervention?
What was the intervention? What was the control?  Does the report have an adequate descriiption of the intervention and control?
What are the main findings of the study? How are the outcomes clinically relevant?
You do not need to respond to other postings, but it is suggested that you read other postings to enhance your understanding of RCTs.
Must be APA 7th edition
