After watching these 3 videos and analyzing the readings from the module, I have come to the conclusion that racism is a systemic driver of health inequity. As a result, it leads to the cause of many social determinants of health that go on to impact the quality of life and healthcare delivery experienced by those of color. When watching these videos, we come across how racism has driven redlining leading to people of color and those of low-income status being unable to be granted home loans and essentially being unable to move forward or upwards towards the “American dream.” This leads to living in sub-par housing with schools with significantly less resources as well as other socioeconomic factors greatly impacting their social determinants of health. With prejudice being a form of racism, it leads to being denied home loans as well as black maternal mortality rates to rise as doctors and nurses overlook the complaints of black mothers. As a result, we can see how racism is a driver of health inequity as it creates the circumstances to have health inequity in the first place and evidently plays a massive role in the social determinants of health for an individual.
