Explore design methods for steel, reinforced concrete beams and columns.
The following drawings are required:
• Column layout plan.
• Building section showing columns, beams and roof structure.
• Beam-column connection details.
Drawings are to be produced in CAD or BIM software and submitted on a minimum of A3-sized sheets.
Drawings must include a title block and be numbered according to industry standard practice.
The following written submissions are required:
• Report on the benefits or drawbacks of an alternative structural solution, utilising a different material
(e.g. if your proposed design is for a steel structure, your report should consider reinforced concrete).
Your evaluation should include calculations and diagrams as necessary to support your position.
• Report and recommendations on the implementation of BIM within your employer’s office. This should consider the benefits and challenges associated with BIM for civil/structural engineering.
You have recently joined a large multi-disciplinary engineering practice as a trainee Civil Engineer. The company are involved in designing buildings, bridges, roads and many other structures crucial to the economic and social well-being of the country. Your employer has been commissioned to develop an outline design proposal, including drawings and specifications, for a small industrial building. You have been assigned the responsibility for developing the structural design. Your employer wishes to provide the client with a specific design solution, but to also inform them of the benefits/drawbacks of using an alternative material/system.
Finally, your employer is also in the process of considering a shift to the use of building information modelling (BIM). You are asked to provide a brief assessment of how BIM may benefit the practice in terms of the production and management of information, and collaboration with other professions.
 To evaluate, secondary beams and main beams design, in the use of concrete or steel. The
material can be cold foam steel, reinforced steel, and high grade steel. It should have enough
strength, and with the environmental and safety consideration.
 Develop the design solution, Include beam, slab or column design with regarding to code of
practice in Hong Kong. The load path is from slab to beam and then to column, the reference
referred and the specification involved
 Produce drawing, you can see the effect of 3D visualization is good, which replace the real
modelling as in before. Also produce drawings, with the corresponding specification.
 Assess the use of BIM, BIM has the use of 3D application, it has clash detection, it also can transfer file from pdf and drawing plan to BIM file. In BIM, once one layer is needed to correct, the other layer will also change accordingly.
 This make BIM more convenient than the use of Auto-cad. Also BIM is a fair and good judgement among the parties of client, consultant and contractor.
 The design solution include beam design and column design, which follows the Code of Practice as in the Building Department. Frame structure or truss structure can be adopted
 The drawings submitted will be in A3 size, with the load path, specification, material, code of
practice and the construction method statement.
The alternative material include FRP and also some called cold foam steel, but not commonly used in Hong Kong.
P7) Develop a design solution, including beam design and column design, for a given scenario. Can you add a part print of P8 drawings and highlight which beam, column, slab that you are going to check?
So I can easily to check your P7 calculation is consistent with your P8 drawings.
Please show more steps and cite the Code of Practice in your design calculation
P8) Produce drawings and specifications in support of a structural design solution. The drawings should be below. See task requirements again. The P7 and P8 should be consistent.
