At the end of the US Civil War in 1865, there were nearly four million newly freed slaves. Reports suggest that almost half of these new citizens were children. A significant proportion of the freed children had been separated from their families or orphaned. Many remained in the South, mostly in rural areas. Freed Black children without caretakers were often relegated either to institutions or to the workforce. While freed Black children faced conditions similar to those experienced by immigrant Catholic children in urban areas on the East Coast, there were no Orphan Train-like “movements” to relocate emancipated children to better conditions. Why do you think there was a difference in the treatment of and provision of services to freed Black children compared to the children “served” by the Orphan Trains?
