What was the educational environment of the elementary school you attended? What was the purpose ascribed to education when you were an elementary student? Torture? Play? Can you separate out those elements of the school that nurtured you and those that did not help you?

I remember my elementary school environment as a positive one. I loved all of my teachers, and all the students got to know a lot of the teachers. We would often switch classrooms for math and history areas of learning, and that was exciting for all the students, and helped us to get to know more than one teacher in our grade. the little hallway outside of the classrooms would get decorated based on what science subject we were learning about, like the ocean, outer space, etc. This made it really fun to go to class, walking through the ocean or outer space, or the desert or rain forest. I felt like the purpose of school was that these are skills that we needed to learn. We needed learn how to read, write, do math, in order to just be able to get through school and to exist in the world. I don’t really think of anything as being nurturing or unhelpful. But I did really like those decorated hallways!

I remember the most about elementary school, more than middle and high actually. It was so fun and I loved going to school. We had an open-classroom concept, without closed doors, so it just felt so warm and inviting. As a teacher now I am not sure I would have loved the no door concept, but as an elementary student I loved it. There was also not a lot of teacher or staff turnover when I went to elem school. I remember already feeling a little connection to my next grade teacher because they stayed in the same grade for the most part. I personally knew my principal and counselor, the office staff, and most of the teachers, so it just felt comfortable. I never felt disconnected from my teachers or school staff until I went to middle school. My undergraduate degree is Elementary Education and I think I chose this career path because of the wonderful, positive experiences I had in elementary school. Ironically, I have moved to teaching middle school and I feel the disconnect with my coworkers as a teacher like I did when I attended middle school. Something about elementary school is just warm and welcoming!
