Vision
Whenever the author thinks of vision, a particular leader comes to mind. This leader called their vision the vital few and it was comprised of a small number of goals that the team was to focus on as part of the strategic vision. He then instructed us all that we should print the vital few and put them on our walls and check ourselves. Everything we did should be towards meeting the vital few goals. It was very motivational as it provided a simple, yet clear list of what the team was expected to do and how they could contribute. Kouzes and Posner (2017) speak about how the vision needs to be visual and come alive for the followers. Although the vital few was words on a page, it was a visual, and one that motivated a team throughout the fiscal year. We knew what we were to work on, and we knew how we contributed to the vital few. Nikookar et al. (2021) support the author’s personal experience with their research which states that leadership vision is positively correlated with organizational effectiveness.
Influence
Influence when done in an unprofessional manner can cause tension. Hughes et al. (2023) describe personal appeals where a person uses their friendship as part of a request for assistance. When a personal appeal is made in an unprofessional manner, the professional relationship as well as the personal relationship are put to the test and potentially damaged or eradicated.
