For this assignment, you’re asked to choose either two or three of the readings/listenings from our
syllabus and write a structured, argumentative essay in response to one of the prompts below,
drawing on the readings for evidence. Your essays should compare and contrast these texts, looking
for details that support your interpretation. Whatever you choose to write on, try to comment on the
form of the text (is it a sonnet with a speaker, a novel with a narrator?) and the conventions
associated with that form, as well as its language and devices such as metaphor, imagery, and
symbolism. Consider what the text sounds like (really, if it’s a recording, or in your head if it’s not)
and how sound contributes to its meaning. Most importantly, though, don’t try to cover everything
that can be said: it’s up to you to narrow your focus into a manageable argument. It would be better
by far to analyze part of a novel in detail than to summarize the whole thing.
