1. Gather your field notes (submitted as Assignment 2, part A), then be sure to use the Assignment 2 Part B Template (Observation) and follow the instructions. Note there is no required minimum or maximum length but there is suggested length guidance provided on the template.
2. The first step of the assignment is to transform your field notes into a written narrative that includes your expanded thoughts on your observations. Minimum length for this part of the assignment is 2 single-spaced pages of text, plus references.
3. Then, you will use your own field notes as the basis to perform a preliminary analysis by reading through and identifying FOUR emergent ideas/themes/observations that you can explain as being related to any of the themes or cultural concepts of food and culture that have been covered in class thus far. Look for things that are emerging from your notes as consistent observations. Some examples of emergent themes might be: gender and food preparation; eating together as our social glue/social support/socialization/sense of belonging and connection; displacement of socially-expected roles around food preparation; how food forms and reflects identities; food as comfort; food as medicine; discomfort at eating unacceptable or undesirable foods, food and shame/stigma, etc — basically anything we have covered in the course so far that relates food to culture in any manner.
4. Try to have at least one of those FOUR themes be something not already listed here, but that rather emerges from what you observed at your field site.
5. You can solidify and support your ideas by doing some literature searches on anything that seems interesting via the ASU library and Google Scholar. Don′t forget to cite the source of the idea). Here are some examples of how to cite both scholarly (books, articles) and non-scholarly (videos, website, lectures, etc) in APA format.
6. Discuss each of the four observations in a paragraph each (again: use the word template). Include concrete examples of your observations to illustrate the point if you can.
7. For each observation/paragraph, you must provide at least one scholarly (peer reviewed) reference that supports your observation. There are four observations so this means you should have at least four references. At least ONE of those four scholarly (peer-reviewed) references has to come from outside of the course material, so you will need to do a little research.
The other three can, if you wish, come from references provides as our course materials, or find more through your own research. You may cite course lecture and video material, but they do NOT count as one of your 4 minimum required citations. Here is some general assistance for locating and using scholarly references and examples of how to cite them in APA format.
You must provide references for any cited peer-reviewed (academic/scholarly) sources and all other sources at the end of the assignment in APA format.
8. Next, write a paragraph reflecting on your experience as an interviewer. How does your own cultural identity and background affect how you ‘see’ and understand the environment and activities you observed? We all have different social positions and related biases. What are some actual (or possible) biases or blind spots that you bring to this research? Here are some more thoughts on this to assist.
9. Finally: you have been awarded a research grant to continue your research at your restaurant/market/festival. Based on what you observed in your short time at your site, what would you want to know more about and why? In the space indicated in the template: A) Pose two research questions you would follow up on in further research at your site, and B) explain your reasoning for each.
