3 paragraph essay (750 words to 1000 words total–250 word minimum per paragraph).
Students will write in MLA or APA format–this includes both in-text citations (citing quotes within each of the three paragraphs) AND the Works Cited page at the end. Final Essay Prompt:
From the California Gold Rush of 1848 to the 21st Century there have been several major themes that pervade the state’s history. Please discuss these THREE themes and their role in California’s history using the class readings and video presentations; racism, labor and the imagery of California as a  place where “everything is possible” through human ingenuity.
Students will write this essay in the following order:
In the first paragraph, identify and discuss THREE specific examples of racism in THREE different eras of California’s history (1848 to 1900, 1900 to 1950, 1950 to 2000). How did these examples of racism affect California as a  society overall. Also, please use ONE direct quote (one sentence only) from the California text.
In the second paragraph, identify and discuss THREE specific examples of labor/employment issues in THREE different eras of California’s history (1848 to 1900, 1900 to 1950, 1950 to 2000). How did these examples of labor/employment  issues affect California as a  society overall. Also, please use ONE direct quote (one sentence only) from the California text.
In the third paragraph, identify and discuss THREE specific examples of the imagery of California as a place where “everything is possible” with human ingenuity in THREE different eras of California’s history (1848 to 1900, 1900 to 1950, 1950 to 2000). How did these examples of that imagery affect California as a  society overall. Also, please use ONE direct quote (one sentence only) from the California text.
STUDENTS MUST PROVIDE A WORKS CITED PAGE AT THE END OF THEIR ESSAY. STUDENTS MUST CITE THE CALIFORNIA BOOK.
