INFORMATIVE SPEECH ASSIGNMENT
TOPIC: This topic should be INFORMATIVE, so, do not attempt to convince your audience of anything. Do not present a call to action. You will explain, describe, and/or inform. Keep in mind that you are the Teacher informing the class on a topic. Your topic MUST BE RESEARCHABLE. This means you must provide OUTSIDE SOURCES. Your topic MUST be DIFFERENT than your persuasive speech and not a variation or reworking of the same topic.
TIME LIMIT: 6 Minutes (20-second leeway over or under)
SOURCES: You must have THREE (3) sources to supplement your material. You must CITE those sources within your presentation, giving credit to the source from which you obtained the information. Citations include the author name, year of publication, and the name of the publication (i.e., Wall Street Journal). If your topic is about cooking, your family’s recipe is not a source. You must obtain OUTSIDE sources from a library or CREDIBLE Internet source. You may use a combination of sources that are CREDIBLE, so not unidentifiable websites. Government agencies, organizations, etc. are acceptable. National and local legitimate news publications or websites are acceptable. Anyone can post a website on the Internet, so make sure your source is credible. Use journals, books, periodicals, etc. YOU are not a source. You are a testimony, example, etc.
Do not use sources from Huffington Post, Wikipedia, EHow, Answers.com, Drudge Report, etc. You will receive a major point reduction for using biased information. I recommend that you stick with academic research found on the Southern Miss libraries website.
SUPPORTING MATERIAL: You must use a variety of supporting materials such as statistics, examples, testimonies, quotes, etc. Plan to use at least three types.
VISUAL AID: A MINIMUM of TWO (2) visual aid is required. Review your text for visual aid ideas. It must be large enough for an audience to see. You may use Powerpoint for your visual aids. Remember, Powerpoint slides are meant to be a visual to reinforce and illustrate and not a manuscript from which you will read. You MUST refer to your visual aid, explain it, describe it and demonstrate how it contributes to your presentation. Simply having a visual next to you or in the background and never using it is unacceptable. Please do not use video or audio clips for the informative speech.
STRUCTURE: You MUST use the speech structure provided in class for your speech outline. You may refer to the speech evaluation forms that will be used for grading. I have also provided you with example outlines of informative speeches. Additionally, please reference the outline for speech structure located under the “course tips” tab on your Blackboard homepage.
DELIVERY: Use extemporaneous presentation style for vocal delivery. That means you PRESENT in a conversational manner and DO NOT READ ALOUD. Reading aloud will significantly reduce your grade. Use facial expressions and hand gestures when appropriate. Plan to engage your audience with eye contact and, perhaps, walk back and forth in front of them to address various sections of the audience rather than standing behind a podium. You are encouraged to use speaker’s notes for reference. However, only note cards, rather than notebook paper, should be used because paper is very distracting. Please use no more than 5 (3X5) notecards for this speech. And please only write on one side of the cards.
PENALTIES: These penalties will be applied if necessary: Reading, Over or under time, Incorrect Speech Type, Biased Information, Failure to include adequate research, Issues with the organization of the speech, Other delivery issues, and Lack of adequate content.
I also need an outline for the speech. I am attaching needed materials.
