Step one:
The readings from the Weaver book this week deal primarily issues of how the church and the state should relate to one another, the proper role of the state, and whether Christians should participate in warfare on the state’s behalf. Your writing assignment for this module is to reflect on these readings and offer some comments and thoughts about these issues. Your writing should provide a thoughtful response to the prompt and incorporate examples from the primary source reading (i. e. the readings in Weaver). Choose ONE of the following prompts.

Ideas about the merits of Christians participating in war changed considerably from the time of Urban II and the Crusades to the time of Desiderius Erasmus. Is there something about the Renaissance era and the humanist movement that would lead some Christians such as Erasmus to rethink the Augustinian idea that Christian participation in war as acceptable?

Compare Calvin’s ideas about how the role of civil government is to support Christianity with the ideas expressed by Helwys, Rogers, and Marsilius. Which arguments do you find most compelling, and why?

What bearing do the ideas of Calvin, Marsilius, Helwys, and Rogers have upon American society and our laws today?
