Purpose:

Instructions for the writing of this paper with suggested headings and subheadings (select only one option):
Option 1
First, have your student title page
Remember to restate your paper’s title at the top of page 2 … above Introduction.
Introduction
Describe and analyze the process of socialization. Begin with responding to the question “Who Am I?” In your descriiption, make sure to incorporate the concepts we have addressed in the course, such as roles, statuses, group membership, etc. Your response to this question should be at least 1 full + page in length. This may be written in 1st person, “I”. Hint: sociological concepts should be clearly identified (defined and cited with the textbook) and then applied. Remember to start a new paragraph when shifting topics — and indent the first line of a paragraph 1/2″ by setting that as your first tab.
My Agents of Socialization
Next, analyze at least 4 agents of socialization that have affected your development as an individual, focusing on childhood socialization into adulthood. Consider, for example, the ways in which the family, religion, media, peers, and education have influenced your development, opportunities, and life choices. *** You are also to bring in events from your day as they relate to each of these four agents. (Many students forget to do this. 🙂 )
Sociological Concepts/Theories
Your analysis of the process of socialization should be at least an additional 3+ pages in length and incorporate at least 4 sociological concepts or theories covered in this course. NOTE: These are to be different from your four agents.
****NOTE: You need to have four agents of socialization AND at least four sociological concepts or theories related to those agents.***
Hint: sociological concepts should be clearly identified (defined and cited using the textbook) and then applied to your socialization. Examples of related concepts and theories include the self, moral development, conflict theory, nature and nurture, and resocialization. These are just some examples.
***Again, note that the sociological concepts used in Part 1 cannot be used again in Part 2.
Conclusion
Be sure to end college papers with a Conclusion which briefly summarizes the topic of the paper.
See the Example of an Assignment #1, which is attached, and which shows the use of headings and subheadings, which I strongly recommend you use, too!
Be sure to start a new paragraph when shifting topics.
Option 2
First, have your student title page
Remember to restate your paper’s title at the top of page 2 … above Introduction.
Introduction
Describe and analyze the process of socialization. For this option, you will analyze the process of socialization in a fictional character. Select a character in a book, a movie, or a television show (it should be a character that is central to the story).
First, provide a brief descriiption of the selected character. In your descriiption, make sure to incorporate the concepts we have addressed in the course, such as the roles, statuses, and group memberships of the character. Also make sure to identify the movie, show, etc. that you are describing. This portion should be at least 1+ page in length.
Agents of Socialization
Next, analyze at least 4 agents of socialization that have seemingly impacted the development of the character (such as family, religion, education, peers, or the media). Describe the socializing agents and analyze what seems to be the impact of those agents on the selected character.
Sociological Concepts/Theories
Your analysis of the process of socialization should be an additional 3+ pages in length and incorporate at least 4 additional sociological concepts or theories covered in this course (hint: sociological concepts should be clearly identified (defined and cited using our textbook) and then applied to the socialization you observe.
Examples of related concepts and theories include the self, moral development, conflict theory, nature and nurture, and resocialization, to name a few.
***Again, note that the sociological concepts used in Part 1 cannot be used again in Part 2.
Conclusion
Be sure to end college papers with a Conclusion which briefly summarizes the topic of the paper.
You are required to cite outside sources in your paper and show the sources under References (which is the last page of your paper and which starts on its own page). Any information taken from an outside source needs to include APA formatted in-text citations and a full reference at the end of the essay. Again, I discourage using direct quotes, as I deduct points if you use them. I am grading your writing, not that of another author. Please write in your own words (paraphrase).
