Your classroom is full of students whom are diverse in worldview. Not all worldviews are true. In fact, every worldview is wrong or just one worldview is right–it’s the implication of having an extensive and different set of objective truth claims. The worldviews that your students have influence them in the classroom–from what they think about themselves and their classmates to whether class content is true or not. You teach through the way you understand the world to be, that is, your worldview. The resources that you use in class are created by people who have particular worldviews that influence the content one way or another.
Case Study
For this case study, consider “your class” to be the grade that you currently teach/assist or would most like to teach.
It’s December 1st and the winter holiday season is upon us! You know your students well enough by now that you’re aware that some will be celebrating particular holidays and others will not.
Let’s say that your goals during this time of the school year are: (1) use the diverse worldviews had by students in your classroom as an opportunity to teach, (2) share your own holiday experiences with wisdom, and (3) create a context for free speech and discussion of ideas that respects every student yet does not promote every worldview as objectively true.
For this case study, write a 500-word essay that addresses the questions:
– What can you do to achieve these three goals for the season? – What challenges do you anticipate and what could you do to avoid them before they occur or resolve them if they occur?
