For this assignment, you will use your active listening skills to apply musical terminology and analyze a piece or song of your choice that is not already covered in the textbook, lectures, or links pages. It will need to provide enough material to meet the needs of the assignment. 3-4 minutes is typically a good length.
Listen to your chosen piece several times, taking notes on what you hear for each of the musical elements. Pay special attention to whenever you hear any changes in each of these categories. Organize this assignment into the following 6 categories: ( see link to the song at the end of the instructions)
Melody (conjunct/disjunct, key/scale, phrases/cadences, register, etc.)
Rhythm (meter, pulse/beat, syncopation, subdivision, durations, etc.)
Harmony (accompaniment, major/minor, consonant/dissonant, etc.)
Timbre (what instruments are used, describe vocal tone quality)
Texture (homophonic, polyphonic, etc.)
Form (strophic, through-composed, verse/chorus, etc.)
In three sentences, sum up the message or meaning of the song or piece of music. (As a starting point, look up the lyrics if you’re using a song with text.)
Write a paragraph (200 words) analyzing which of your observations about the musical elements (Part A) convey this message (Part B). If there were no lyrics, would the music still have the same meaning? Why and how?
Please include a YouTube link to the piece that matches your listening guide:
