Cognitive Neuroscience
,Mike who is taking psychology courses at Beck University, starts working on his homework. But Marla is worried about Jacob, and starts calling around. Eventually, the police call; they found Jacob walking around the park. They took him to the hospital because he seemed to be disoriented and was exhibiting signs of memory loss.
Marla shares all this with Mike, who struggles with what to do. He has a major test coming up that he needs to study for, and his dad is safe at the hospital. It’s not like he could do much; it’s all up to the doctors now. But this is his dad. What if it’s something serious?
Mike calls the hospital and talks to Dr. Ramsey, Jacob’s doctor.
“Blood tests show no drugs or alcohol in his system,” Dr. Ramsey says. “I think it might be lesions in the brain. At 55 years old, he’s young for dementia or Alzheimer’s. Jacob is getting an MRI, and we’ll know more after that.”
Our ability to think starts with the biological actions in our brain. What areas of the brain might cause disorientation or memory loss? What other problems could occur in a brain that might cause these symptoms?
Instruction::
Hi Class,
You are off to a great start with the discussions!
This week our topic is cognitive neuroscience, a fascinating area of study that looks at the biological processes involved in our thoughts and our learning.
You will notice that the discussion prompts look like our prompts from last week. Just be sure to choose a different prompt than you did last week and have the focus on cognitive neuroscience. Behavioral learning theory (observable behaviors) will not work unless, for example, you are including what happens in the brain at the time the behavior is changing. We want to know what is happening inside the brain.
Week 3 Assignment Overview
There is a video overview of the week 3 assignment posted in Announcements. In addition there is a video in Announcements on how to find scholarly articles in the Capella library. Feel free to ask questions about the assignment in the Ask Your Instructor area.
A Reminder about Yellowdig Scoring
Rely on your Yellowdig Points Earned area to know where you stand with discussion scoring. You can earn a max of 120 points each week by making a main post and having three replies.
On Monday mornings you will see your points go down in Grades because the system is adding in the new points possible for the new week. You did not lose points. You will see the points go back up as you start posting for the new week. For example, today, Monday 7/17, if you had a 200% under Yellowdig Discussions in Grades , you will have a 90% this morning (because the points possible for Week 2 are now factored in). As you post this week, it will go back up.
Clarifying notes on DISCUSSION FORMAT and EXPECTATIONS:
In addition to discussing the content each week, Courtney, Aseye and Krista (our wonderful GAs) and Dr. Krystle and I will be coaching on form for citing and referencing your sources, so that you are learning APA as we go. While Yellowdig is less formal than our previous Blackboard, acknowledging and giving credit to sources is still required any time you are using sources of information, which you should do in each of your main posts.
Please note: It is not acceptable to copy and paste information as your post. If you use information from sources as written by the source, you must use quotation marks and provide both an intext citation and reference (otherwise it is plagiarism). (Most of you are citing your work). You must also discuss some of that information by adding your own thoughts/examples, explaining what you learned, etc. Plagiarized posts will not receive credit.
