STUDENT ENGAGEMENT PAPER ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Tinto’s original Student Engagement Theory (1975) remains a cornerstone for both theoretical
constructs as well as practical co-curricular approaches for promoting student retention. Using
your text and four other scholarly sources, construct a 5-7 page paper (in addition to your title
and reference pages) addressing a researched response to the following questions:
 What is student engagement, and why is it important?
 How is engagement created/promoted?
 Is non-organic engagement as effective as organic (i.e. elective participation in a student
club verses a required mentoring course)?
 Can true engagement be fostered in the online educational environment?
 What innovative, “outside the box” methods may be used to promote greater student
engagement?
Support your discussion with your biblical worldview, complete with at least one applicable
Scripture passage. Be sure to clearly identify major parts of your paper using section headings.
This assignment must reflect current APA style, which includes, but is not limited to, using one
inch margins on all sides, 12-point Times New Roman font, consecutive page numbers in the
upper right corner of the header, a title page, an abstract, and references page.
