Assignment two
Both authors of our readings from week four discuss how basic management principles apply to public safety organizations and how straying from those principles can cause organizational failures.
In the work of Clarissa Dias and Michael Vaughn, the authors use examples from case studies to demonstrate how “administrative breakdown and managerial disorganization” can be analyzed through the lenses of six organizational elements.
For assignment two, you will discuss each organizational element and your experiences with the application of the organizational element in an organization, preferably a bureaucracy, with which you’ve been involved. Depending on the element, your may have experienced efficient and effective use of the element, administrative breakdown because of ineffective or inappropriate use of the element, or something in between. The goal is to synthesize the author’s explanation of the organizational element and supplement that with your own experiences and, if necessary, outside academic sources. Because the elements discussed are present in all sorts of organizations, it should not be necessary for you to have been involved in a public safety organization to complete the assignment. If you have no personal experiences related to the organizational element, you can supplement the authors discussion with research which may include interviewing someone who has had such experiences. The organizational elements are:
Goals and Objectives
Division of Labor
Hierarchy of Authority
Command and Control
Accountability
Communication
Your instructor will be looking for you to use critical thinking skills, demonstrate that you understand the concepts of organizational elements, and for you to make thoughtful connections between the theory and real world experiences.
Your paper should be 5-6 pages (not including work cited or cover page), double spaced, 1” margins, and use two outside academic sources beyond the paper that is the object of the assignment (a source used by the author of the object paper may be appropriate). Your paper should have a conclusion section in which you summarize what you’ve learned from the assignment. Needs to be in Times new Roman 12 font.
All academic submissions require a title page and reference section, both of which do not count towards your total page requirement. So in total a cover page 5-6 papers and then a reference page. The references need to be in APA format.
Readings From Week 4:
Management Vs. Leadership Firefighter Nation Content Directors
This short article by Bradley M. Pinsky, fire chief and attorney, advocates for scientific management principles within Emergency Services. Because fire, EMS, dispatch, and police have similar structures, much if not all of the article is applicable universally to public safety administrators.
Bureaucracy, managerial disorganization, and administrative breakdown in criminal justice agencies
This is a twelve-page 2006 article by Clarissa Freitas Dias of Georgia State University and Michael Vaughn of Sam Houston State University. In their article, the two discuss broadly universal principles of management. The authors then discuss more specifically use examples from organizational failures in criminal justice organizations to illustrate what it looks like when managers fail to properly apply these organizational principles. Employees in every discipline of public safety will recognize traits of their organization discussed in this article.
