REQUIRED EVENT: Carnegie Museum of Art and Natural History.
The paper is worth 125 points, broken down as follows:
25 points for attendance PLUS:
100
points for the content and organization of your paper. 95 points are
distributed according to the criteria below. The other 5 points are for
grammar, spelling, etc.
The instructions for the layout of the paper as follows:
1.
The “Required Sections of the Research Paper” must total a MINIMUM of 3
WHOLE PAGES. This does NOT include the picture or the Works Cited. The
layout of the paper must be 1.5 spacing, 11 pt. Times New Roman font,
1inch margins at top, bottom and sides, and justified side margins. Failure
to follow any of the layout criteria will result in an automatic loss
of major points according to my in-class discussion. You will turn in both a hard copy and a copy through Safe Assign.
Please
note: NO MORE THAN 15% OF THE PAPER CAN BE FROM A QUOTED SOURCE,
WHETHER YOU ARE QUOTING DIRECTLY (QUOTE) OR INDIRECTLY (PARAPHRASING.) This is YOUR research paper and not information that you are copying and/or paraphrasing from someone else’s research.
2. You may use either MLA or APA style for Works Cited, in text citations, etc. Just be consistent.
3. After the minimum of 3 full pages of text, you will include a picture of the work you have chosen (page 4).
4. Bibliography or Works Cited pages will be last. You must have a minimum of 4 sources, which can include documentaries, periodicals, books, and museum websites. At least 2 of those sources must be academic or scholarly/peer reviewed.
However, you may use as many more academic and/or peer-reviewed sources
as you like. In fact, your sources may all be peer-reviewed. The more
academic and scholarly sources, the higher the quality of your research.
If you have difficulty finding these types of sources, you must see me
ASAP. You may not use Wikipedia for anything other than pictures.
PLEASE
NOTE: FAILURE TO USE EITHER THE REQUIRED TOTAL NUMBER OF SOURCES OR THE
REQUIRED MINIMUM NUMBER OF ACADEMIC AND/OR SCHOLARLY SOURCES WILL
RESULT IN AN AUTOMATIC LOSS OF 15 POINTS FOR EACH MISSING SOURCE.

Wikipedia may NOT be used for anything other than pictures.
PLEASE NOTE WHAT IS NOT ACADEMIC OR SCHOLARLY:
Oxford online Dictionary of Art
No kind of dictionary and no kind of encyclopedia, whether in print or on line
Dr. Lorenz’s lectures

REQUIRED SECTIONS OF THE RESEARCH PAPER:

Whether
you are discussing a painting, sculpture, or any other piece of art,
you are to follow the criteria used whenever one critiques a work of
art. You will give
1. the biographical information (title, artist, date, country). (2 points)
2. description with enough detail to create a clear verbal picture of what you have chosen. (8 points)
3. historical context. This is where the majority of your research will lie. (50 points). You must give
A. info about the artist (short bio that includes info about h/his other work) (15 points)
B. information about significant historical events or context in which the work was created that is relevant to the
particular art movement and/or the art itself (25 points)
C. the style of painting/sculpture or movement that your chosen piece is representative of (5 points)
D. the characteristics the piece has that are representative of that style or movement (5 points)
4. analysis and interpretation of the work. Because these two sections lead from one to the other (analysis to
interpretation) and, therefore, often have overlapping information, you are permitted to combine them. You must
include the discussion of composition such as color, lines, movement, geometric shapes, texture, placement
(remember the playdough activity) plus any other analytic criteria you choose to use. This section may also
include a BRIEF reference to information you already discussed earlier in your paper in order to support your
analysis and interpretation. (25 points)
5. value of the art both at the time it was created and now. This is not necessarily monetary value but rather the
social, historical value of the work. Include supporting detail..(5 points)
6. your personal opinion of the piece and why.
7. your opinion of the museum experience as a whole.
NOTE: # 6 and 7 together are worth 5 points.
