This week’s article “The Ultimate Side-Hustle How-to Guide: 10 Rules for Side Hustle Success” focused on how to make your side hustle successful. The first rule is to consistently crush your full-time job. You must be dedicated and focused on performing your best at work before you can focus on a side hustle. You also should not be working on your side hustle during your full-time job as it is unethical. The second rule is to never take on side hustle debt. “A huge percentage of startups fail because they never turn a profit – much less pay back their investment” (Haden, 2018, p. 2). You should try to start a side hustle with items you already have or services you can provide to turn a profit instead debt. The third rule is don’t use a side hustle as an excuse. Using a side hustle as an excuse to purchase an item you want can lead to a failed side hustle. Rule four is don’t spend money the customer won’t see. Think about the money you spend and the effect of your customer. Will it affect the customer, is the main question you should be asking. If it is not going to have an effect on the customer, it is not worth spending the money. You should use your money towards customers. The fifth rule is to only spend money on actual efficiency. It is important to not waste money on supplies and equipment if there is not a demand for it. The sixth rule is to always follow a strict side-hustle schedule. It is important to follow a strict schedule such as you do with your full-time job our you won’t see progress. The seventh rule is to dream big but focus small. “Rather than finding a way to make a million dollars, find a way to serve a million customers” (Haden, 2018, p.3). This will build your skills and customer to continue to increase into a larger business. The eighth rule is to only do what generates revenue. Don’t waste time on doing things that aren’t going to help you bring in a profit from your side-hustle. The ninth rule is to always default to action. When creating a side hustle, it is important to spend time planning but to not over plan. It is more important to spend time doing. The tenth and final rule is to your side hustle as “me time” Your side hustle should be something you enjoy and want to work towards (Haden, 2018).
Another thing I think is important is to think about is the importance of not being set back by failure. Failure means growth and just because your first idea didn’t work out, it doesn’t mean your second one won’t. If the first attempt wasn’t successful it was still a learning experience. “Each failure will come as a lesson and help you see what works and what doesn’t” (Wealth, 2022, para 27).

The article “The Ultimate Side-Hustle How-To Guide: 10 Rules for Side-Hustle Success” by Jeff Haden details 10 things that are important when managing a side-hustle. Since nearly 44 million Americans have a side-hustle this is a very important topic (Haden, 2018). The first rule Haden gives is to give most of your focus to your full-time job. Though you may want to further your side-hustle, it is important that you focus most on your full-time job because that is where you make the majority of your money, so you do not want to lose it. The next rule is to not go into debt starting your side hustle. It is difficult to start making profit on a new business when you are trying to pay off a debt. Instead start a side-hustle that you do not need to buy anything for or that you only need to buy a few things for. The third rule is to not use your side-hustle as an excuse for a purchase. If there is a purchase you want to make, don’t start a side hustle as an excuse to make the purchase. Making a large purchase is not a good way to begin a side-hustle. The fourth rule is to not spend money on things that the customer will never see. Spending money decking out an office that no customer will come into is wasting money. The fifth rule is to only spend money on efficiency. Instead of buying things ahead because they may help you in the future, wait until you actually need them. The sixth rule is to set a schedule and follow it. By setting a schedule for when you will work on your side-hustle you are more likely to actually do that work because you have time set aside for it. The seventh rule is to have big goals but work on them slowly and have many small goals in between. The eighth rule is to work on what will actually make money. Working on the business can be important, but it is more important to actually do the work of the business because that is what is making the money. The ninth rule is to plan less and do more. The tenth and final rule is to choose a side-hustle that you will want to do. By picking something you will want to do you are much more likely to stick with it and put your all into it. An article from the Hardvard Business Review mentions features of a side-hustle that make a person enjoy it more. The first feature is that it offers the person autonomy over when and what they chose to do with the side-hustle (Nahrgang, Sessions, Vaulont, and Bartels, 2020). Another important feature is the skill, the side-hustle has to involve a skill that the person is able to do and enjoys doing (Nahrgang et al., 2020).
