Now that you have reviewed the material on the Great Depression and the New Deal, your assignment is to locate a primary source on the topic. Normally I provide you with many options but, for this assignment, you will locate this one on your own. Part of the assignment will be verifying that you located a primary source, not just a secondary source or background information. If you just located background material, you will receive minimal credit on the assignment for not following directions. Once you have your source, write a journal entry of 300 words or more analyzing it and what that source teaches you about the Great Depression. Remember, focus on the source itself and pull out specific details from it in your journal entry. If you just share the link and then write about background material you found somewhere else, the assignment will receive minimal credit. You must include a link to the original source in your entry or you will lose points.
If you are not sure if you have a primary source or not, email me at least a day before the due date with a link to the source and I can give you a quick verification. If you wait until the night the assignment is due, you will not have the time for me to check your source before you write your journal. I will be checking my email each day to help you if you have questions, but I am also counting on you to contact me promptly if you need help.
If you need a review on primary sources, please go back to Week 1 Introduction and review the mini lecture on primary sources. A Wikipedia page is not a primary source. An entry in an online encyclopedia is not a primary source. The chapters in the American Yawp textbook are not primary sources. An article talking about the history of the Great Depression is not a primary source. Do not pick any of them.
If you select something other than a primary source, you will receive no higher than a 13/25 for the journal itself (and possibly less than that). If you pick a Wikipedia page or an encyclopedia article despite the warning above, you will receive a 0 for the journal entry.
Suggestions: This is a broad topic so there are many types of primary sources you could find. For example, you could find an account of what it was like for ordinary people during the Great Depression. You could even find primary source accounts of the Dust Bowl as I would accept those. Any primary sources relating to the New Deal would also be acceptable.
To sum up, your assignment requires you to:
Find a primary source on the Great Depression or the New Deal.
Write a journal entry of 300 words or more analyzing the source and what you learn about the period from it. That means you should draw some conclusions from it, not just summarize what it says.
Include a link to the source you found.
Reminder: Plagiarizing the assignment or using manufactured quotes (AI often makes up details not found in the source) will result in a 0.
