Cells that make up the nervous system are called neurons. Neurons are the fundamental units of our bodies brain and nervous system. These cells are responsible for receiving a stimulus / sensory input from an external source and sending an electrical signal / impulse (What is a Neuron?). A neuron is composed of three parts: dendrites, an axon and a cell body or soma. The main part of the neuron is the cell body (Patton & Thibodeau, 2019). The branch like projections from the cell body are the dendrites (Patton & Thibodeau, 2019). The axon is an elongated projection, like a tail on an animal (Patton & Thibodeau, 2019). Our dendrites carry the impulse received to our neuro cell bodies, and the axon of the neuron carries the impulse away from the cell body (Patton & Thibodeau, 2019). In addition to our neurons, our nervous system has supporting cells called glia or neuroglia (Patton & Thibodeau, 2019). These supporting cells do not transmit impulses, but instead offer support and protection for the functioning neurons. Glia not only offer support and protection, but they also specialize in function (Patton & Thibodeau, 2019).
