In Week 6 we studied Fullan’s ideas around change leadership. For extra credit in the Week 7 discussion, let’s contrast his views with those concerning management that emerged in the late 19th century. Frederick Taylor and others during the 1880s to 1920s developed a philosophy of organizational management know as scientific management. Influenced by scientific thinking, and the philosophical positions of logical atomism and positivism espoused by thinkers such as Berrtand Russell, it was a theory of management that analyzed and synthesized workflows, with an emphasis on inputs and outputs. The main objective was on improving economic efficiency, especially labor productivity. In this model, workers were considered mostly as a unit of production. Taylor relied heavily on time and motion studies, believing that there was one best way to do any job. Workers were expected to adhere to the prescribed procedures in all things. Although most of Taylor’s work was in manufacturing, he believed Taylorism could be applied in many disciplines, including universities and government.
