Compose an essay on the topic given below. Follow the conventions for writing a literary essay in terms of organization, argument (thesis statement), and citations. There are instructions, a check list, Also, don’t forget to double check grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Individualism or self-fulfillment is set against the norms of the collective, which may be shaped by for example tradition, culture, or family. Analyze how the relation between individual aspirations and collective norms play out in one of the following texts:
Breath, Eyes, Memory by Edwidge Danticat
“Games at Twilight” by Anita Desai
The Golden Age by Joan London
“The Whale Rider” – film directed by Niki Caro
“The Drover’s Wife” by Henry Lawson.
These narratives are all quite different, and the topic may be understood in several ways in one text, which gives you a great deal of freedom in how you decide to angle your topic. Don’t forget to give your essay a good title, which informs the reader what it will be about. As relevant, include a discussion on the relevance of cultural background to the text you are analyzing!
Grading Criteria: To receive a passing grade (G), the student should be able to use literary concepts as appropriate (e.g. setting, characterization, symbolism, narrative perspective) and compose a comprehensible essay that
Demonstrates the ability to understand the thematic content of literary texts.
Includes textual evidence such as quotations or references to passages in the primary texts.
Identifies the subject of the essay and contains a thesis statement in the introductory paragraph.
Does not contain awkward sentence structure or language errors that distort or obscure meaning.
Contains paragraphs that support the thesis statement.
