Dylan: I agree with David Kennedy’s quote that the war in the Pacific was a race war because of fear-mongering echoing throughout all media channels after Pearl Harbor. “In the spring of 1942, we in the United States placed some 110,000 persons of Japanese ancestry in protective custody. Two out of every three were American Citizens by birth; one-third were aliens forbidden by law to become citizens.”(image 35, Dorothea Lange and Toyo Miyatake’s,” KCET series, “Lost LA,”) Japanese Americans were targeted after pearl harbor by our government and placed into “protective custody.” There was no protection. It was a ploy by our government to separate a whole community and essentially punish them for crimes created outside of our country. Our government also helped spread fears of spies and treason happening throughout the Japanese community. “No charges had been filed against these people nor had any hearing been held. Evacuation was on a Racial, or, perhaps more accurately, on ancestral grounds… not one conviction of sabotage or espionage by Japanese-Americans citizens has been obtained.”(image 35, Dorothea Lange and Toyo Miyatake’s,” KCET series, “Lost LA,”). Our government essentially partnered with racist media channels to create a race war. David Kennedy speaks about the echoing effect these racist voices had during this time, “By this time facts were no protection against the building gale of fear and prejudice… Unapologetically racist voices also joined the chorus. `We’re charged with wanting to get rid of the Japs for selfish reasons.’”(David Kennedy, Freedom from Fear, pg 567). These selfish reasons helped create one of the largest forced migrations in American history. All out of fear created by the partnering of our government and these racist media channels during wartime. Which helped further our fight against the Japanese in the pacific. Playing off of these fears creates a bigger hatred towards one community. Therefore adding emotion into a conflict aganist the Japanese furthering the approval of a war in the pacific and back home.
