In this assignment you will begin by finding a short piece of media. You must choose a commercial, movie trailer, music video, or other short YouTube video from the last 5 years that relates to women or other marginalized groups. (Note: No exceptions will be made to the 5-year requirement. An automatic 15% deduction will be applied to any paper written on something more than 5 years old.) Write a very concise report of three (3) pages, double-spaced.
After watching the piece you have chosen, your job is to offer a concise, yet clear, overview of the pop culture object. In this section of the paper, you will begin by providing a brief summary of the object you have chosen. Next, you will contextualize it by outlining the following for your reader: What is its intended meaning? Who produced it? What year was it produced? Where did you find it? How might it circulate to other people within the community and beyond? This should take about a page or page and a half. The rest of the page limit should be devoted to a critical analysis of the pop culture object.
In your critical analysis, you should be drawing on course concepts and ideas from the notes and readings (you may cite the course notes sparingly, but only for material that is not in the primary pieces). This means you should be drawing on course authors and course readings to talk about the way women and/or other marginalized groups are represented in your chosen piece. For example, you might think about how the beauty myth is being resisted, or perpetuated, what kinds of assumptions are being made about women and women’s sexuality or sexual behavior, what filmic techniques are being used, whether or not notions of femininity are relying on an essentialized understanding of what it means to be a woman, etc. Remember: this is a short piece, so you likely won’t be able to address more than one or two course concepts in your critical analysis.
Your grade will be based on the following criteria:
Do you adequately convey the content of the chosen piece? (Included in this criterion is whether or not your reading is charitable—i.e. assumes the most rational interpretation of the piece, respecting the author’s intended meaning.)
Do you make good use of course concepts or ideas in your critical analysis? Is your critical analysis related to the content of the piece in question?
Is the analysis structurally and stylistically sound? (Only reports with perfect or nearly perfect grammar and paragraph structure will be considered for A+ grades.)
