Project Proposal: (2 pages)
Identify one way in which you could use Kearins’ model for an additional experiment. Pretend this is a proposal for an actual experiment you will carry out! It should be practical and strictly follow the Kearins design. You will need to use two different groups (you have easy access to), since you won’t have access to the same kind of sample as Kearins. This could be a younger vs. an older sample, different genders, different occupations, etc. However, you will use exactly the same sets of objects Kearins used, i.e., for naturalistic different use a set of rocks, leaves, or the like, and for artifactual different use a set of human made objects (no need to do naturalistic or artifactual same).
Select samples that you have easy access to. Sample size: Minimally n=6 in each group (total minimally n=12). Make sure to use an even number.
It will be best for you to work with two arrays, which you can set up in advance. Cover them with a light kitchen towel or cardboard.
Clearly state:
1) Briefly describe the experiment and give a rationale (why does it make sense to do the experiment you are proposing?) and research question/hypothesis/prediction. Your rationale should be based on a careful reading of the Kearins article (include in-text APA reference) as well as the six other articles on visual-spatial memory you selected. Include in-text article references (and list them under References at the end). You must have between 4 and 7 in-text references in your initial paragraph or two. One paragraph is fine, two paragraphs are fine, but be brief and focused. One sentence statements about the references only.
2) Two groups of objects to be used in the experiment. Describe and list each object for each set as specified below in the outline (you can list them in parens). Your research must use a 20 square array (meaning: two sets of 20 objects). You must include two images with all the objects on the two arrays. Make sure the objects are clearly visible. The images are figures in APA style and must be properly numbered and captioned.
3) Two samples. (Which groups could you contrast?) Discuss how you will access your samples. IF IT WERE POSSIBLE, I WOULD GO TO THE SENIOR CENTER AND ASK 6 MALES AND 6 FEMALES TO PARTICIPATE.
4) Write up a paragraph of verbal instructions you will give your research participants. Make sure you cover all the elements outline in the video assignment on participant instructions. This paragraph must include: How long will the experiment take? Is it anonymous? Can they stop at any time? When will you provide feedback? Instruct participants to tell you when they are finished replacing items. Etc. Give the participants 30 seconds to memorize the objects and unlimited time to replace them. Make sure to review the video on how to write your instructions.
5) Reference list. At this point your APA reference style should be near perfect.
6) Attach a scoring sheet and scoring table (blank). Create a scoring sheet for each individual participant (the easiest way may be to use a picture of the original arrays on which you mark correct replacements and the replacement time on top). Given that you need to keep track of correct replacements and replacement time, create a table for it.
7) Conduct a pilot with one person in your household (while following current mandates during the pandemic). Do with this one person what you have seen in the Kearins video. Use the instructions you have developed, carry them out. Use the objects proposed on the array. Report briefly on the results using your scoring sheet and table and discuss your experience (how things worked and maybe did not work).
Length: As long as it takes (presumably a page or two)
All references need to be provided APA style in the text and in the reference list. (References only as needed.)
