Final Paper
The final paper will be five single-spaced pages with standard formatting (the equivalent of ten double-spaced pages). (This is roughly 3,000 words.) Citations should follow any common format: e.g., Chicago, APA, etc. You may choose a topic covering anything directly related to the course material – I am very open regarding topics – but use at least one of the required books to help make your argument (even if you are arguing against the position taken in the book). If you have any difficulty deciding on a topic, here are two suggested topics:
In Michael Moore’s 2015 documentary, Where to Invade Next, the director visits several countries to find policy innovations that were first devised in the United States, and have worked well in the countries in which they were actually implemented. Choose at least one of the problems we discussed in class, and suggest detailed solutions based on other countries’ experience.
OR
Democracy is in trouble in the United States. Trump’s election has pushed some to rethink the desirability of democracy, and to fashion ways for the intellectual elite to exert more influence over democratic decision-making. Others, particularly the roughly half of eligible voters who do not vote, feel that the US political system does not offer them anything worth their participation in politics. How can the political-economic system of the United States be reformed to better achieve the promise of democracy, the system of government that gives all citizens equal power in governing themselves?
