This is an intensive writing course, and you will be writing an evidence-based practice paper built in stages throughout the course. You will be able to write about a topic of your choosing and select a practice problem with literature supporting a specific practice change/intervention.
Examining the Healthy People 2030 site and the identified objectives or the evidence-based resources section is an excellent place to start looking for a topic. You can explore the site to find information about a national health problem.
You are not required to write about something from that Healthy People 2030. Feel free to choose a topic that excites you. The suggested resources are just some places where you might find something that is of interest to you or give you an idea.
IMPORTANT: EBP is about using already published evidence to support your use of an intervention or practice you are considering for your patients/clients. The studies you use must address the chosen intervention’s efficacy.
Imaginary example of EBP in the community: A neighborhood group with several new residents who are unfamiliar with the neighborhood’s unique culture wants the newcomers to feel more welcome. To help everyone adjust to the new neighbors and for the neighbors to adapt to the new area, the neighborhood group leaders decided to start a weekly shared neighborhood dinner with a menu of favorite foods. Before this intervention of weekly community meals is started, a team-leading project completes a search of the published literature. The team was surprised to find so many excellent papers on community meals to build a sense of community and cohesiveness in the neighborhood. Interestingly, however, the evidence presented in the papers did not demonstrate any benefit from the intervention. Because of this evidence, the neighborhood group decided to try another approach for their first attempt at community building.
Review the format of the paper and use the provided template located in D2L to build your paper. The paper is written in three drafts, and a final paper is due the last week of class. The paper includes:
An introduction.
A problem statement.
A purpose statement.
A search strategy.
An appraisal of the literature.
Synthesis of the literature.
Practice recommendations.
A conclusion/summary.

The introduction is due at the end of the second week (Tuesday at 11:59). The introduction focuses on the broad topic that your problem stems from. You will introduce the topic and provide a general description, the incidence and prevalence of the condition, the outcomes, and the concern. At the end of the introduction, you provide a transition statement that tells the reader about the rest of the paper. See the rubric for the introduction in the assignment’s dropbox.
