For this assignment, you will COMPOSE a 250 word interpretive essay and you will REVIEW one essay submitted by a PEER. So you MUST submit your draft in two places: HERE on the professor page, and HERE, on the peer review page.
Your answer will be your organized response to the following prompt:
Pope Francis, Michael Himes (Links to an external site.)and the US Catholic Bishops, in their outline of Roman Catholic Social Teaching (CST (Links to an external site.)), each present a compelling vision of the nature and meaning of Human Dignity.
Consider ONE of these three sources, and answer this question: how might this vision of Human Dignity help someone reconsider their own life, its meaning, with particular focus on what they do, both day-to-day and over a lifetime (work, family, etc.)?
Your essay should “unpack” your answer to the question (your THESIS). Although your voice is present, your own personal opinion about the nature and meaning of ‘dignity’ is not a main focus of this essay. Instead, you are being asked to think critically about the concept that has been presented to you.
Your essay should be highly structured, following this format:
1. Sentences 1-3: Present an overview of the essay; bring your reader into the essay.
2. Sentence 4: your answer to the question, the THESIS.
3. The remainder of the essay should be dedicated to “unpacking” your thesis: provide reasons why it is valid.
4. Finally, you are to conclude with a nuanced claim about the nature and meaning of human dignity, namely what promise and peril it offers.
Be sure to cite specifically from the source you are using. Full, direct quotations are not allowed. You must paraphrase or summarize what you are using from these two sources.
Please strive to shape a complete thesis in your introduction that explains what the challenge is, and what the promising impact might be from living out your vision of dignity, despite the challenge. Please bold-face the thesis so that I will know you know where you are making your central claim. Thesis statements should focus and specify your overall response to the assignment, nailing down what the challenge is that your essay will develop regarding the concept of dignity, and what promising impact might result from this concept.
You will have several opportunities in group discussions and in later assignments to consider how your own thinking relates to the specific concepts we deal with in the course.
As part of the writing process, you must engage in PEER REVIEW and you must also submit your essay to Rivier’s Writing Center.
Peer Review
If submitted on time, your essay will be assigned a peer review, and you will, in turn, be assigned an essay to review. In 5-7 sentences, review your peer’s essay. Identify ONE strength and why it is a strength. Identify ONE weakness, state why it is a weakness, and offer a suggestion to correct it. For tips on how to complete the peer review, read the Peer Review Guidelines.
When you complete the Peer Review, use the comment box on the right hand side of the screen.
Writing Center
In addition to engaging in peer review, you are required to submit your draft to Rivier’s Writing Center for review by a writing consultant. Read Using the Academic Support Center and Submitting your Dignity Essay (Initial Draft) to the Academic Support Center for instructions.
