Session 5 Discussion.
Chapter 10
Childhood obesity is rising at an alarming rate. Review the chapter material. Then using materials from the chapter or your own research, create a one-page flyer (200 words or more) for parents about how to prevent obesity in their children. The brochure could be set up as a “do’s and don’ts,” for the many factors that play into obesity, such as food choices and calories, physical activity, and screen time (all types of screens, including television). Make sure your advice is backed up by research (i.e., at least 1 peer-reviewed journal article).

Chapter 11
Chapter 11 discusses the legal requirements for educating children with special needs. Federal laws mandate the requirements, but laws vary by state and, more importantly, local laws and regulations enacted by local school boards. Using the Internet, research the state and local laws and procedures for the school board where you currently live, grew up, or any other locality of your choice. Prepare a one-page information sheet for parents outlining what they need to do to get and enforce an IEP (Individualized Educational Program) for their special needs student. Include in your flyer information on legal and other support groups for parents of children with special needs.
Here are some generic resources to get you started (these are not state or locality specific):
