OK, you know you have read Harvey, and your head is probably swimming! I know, I have been there! So, let me give you some questions to think about before you put your post together.
You don’t have to answer every single question here! I am just helping you organize your thoughts:
•It seems that Harvey is arguing that it is ESSENTIAL that we study cities carefully. Why do you think that is?
•The KEY argument in this essay is what I have been talking about in this unit: how he prioritizes PROCESS over things, when studying the city. Can you think of examples of this, from the reading, and perhaps from your experience about living in a city? Remember that quote that I mentioned before: “process takes precedence over things” because “we should think of things (in a city) as products of processes” (230).
•Think a bit about his thoughts of community–we have this idea of community as always positive! But he makes the interesting point that the idea of community also gives us ‘gated communities’ and segregation! Any thoughts on this? Keep in mind he is not trying to get rid of the notion of community–he’s just stressing that the word is usually only used in a ‘positive’ sense. . .
•What about his ideas about cities being part of the HUMAN ECOLOGY? (this is all on page 233.) Remember that the word ecology is not ‘environmental’. . . Look up the word!
Same requirements: 1 original post, 2 replies to your classmates’ posts (each reply for a separate post). I WILL ATTACH THE REPLIES WHEN POSTED.
