Instructions from Professor:
This is a 400 level writing intensive course. You are University
students and adults. I expect you to write as such. My tolerance for
poor writing grows lower and lower as I age. It is my job to evaluate
the content of your writing and help you better construct an argument.
Don’t make that harder on me with sloppy writing. Apologies if the
following is obvious to you. Many, perhaps most, of you don’t need this
talk.
As a human being. READ YOUR PAPER before you
submit it. Relying on the computer to do all the proper spell checking
is simply moronic. The computer might change a misspelled word to a
correctly spelled incorrect word. This is not the place to be lazy.
Quotations, skip them all. There is a disease that
undergraduate students have. I think its similar to HPV. It’s called
“quotation-itis”. NEVER EVER EVER EVER use a quotation to make a point.
NEVER EVER EVER begin a sentence or a paragraph with a quotation. NEVER
EVER EVER EVER use a quotation to use the language. If you are simply
quoting an adjective, you are simply doing it wrong and should have your
grade lowered by at least one full letter. DON’T put a quotation in
your introduction (there is a way to do that properly, but Im not your
English professor)
No more than one quotation per page is allowed.
No quotation longer than one line…not one sentence!…is allowed.
No quotation less than 4 words is allowed.
Skipping to make any direct quotations is encouraged. They do not
help the way you think they do. They do not add to what you are trying
to say. You often use them because you can’t think of a way to say the
idea in a different way, because that is hard to do. That approach is
incorrect.
Citations and Paraphrasing. These things are good. You
should paraphrase instead of making quotations. And you should make
citations for everything you paraphrase (and also if you dare to make a
quotation). Do your best with this, I wont be overly picky. And as far
as format is concerned, just do it the way you tend to do and stay
consistent. And do note, if you are bold enough to actually use a
quotation after all of my scolding, you better give it a proper
citation. I hate quoting by students enough as it is and I think you are
shooting yourselves in the foot when you try and use them, so you
better not do them incorrectly on top of that.
Write a proper essay. 400 level writing intensive
course. Write a proper introduction. Write a proper conclusion. You are
supposed to have learned how to do that by now. Creating an argument
with a proper thesis can be hard and that is what I am supposed to be
teaching you. It is not supposed to be my responsibility to tell you how
to make a proper introductory paragraph.
