A. (600 words) As South Korean society has changed rapidly since the Korea War ended in 1953, so have political issues and social grievances. Describe South Korean social movement since the 1960s to the present. Consider the following factors of the movement in each decade (1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 2000s, etc.
Main issues/causes (e.g., uneven distribution of wealth, labor management, political oppression,)
Movement goals (e.g., regime change, unification, democracy, NGOs, etc.)
Major organizers and participants (e.g., laborers, farmers, university students, white- collar workers, middle class, professional activists, etc.)
Discuss also the outcome or consequences of the movement (e.g., decline of a certain movement, emergence of certain power elite class, etc.).
B. (600 words) Imagine you are to give a class presentation on North Korea and North Korean people.
1) Describe this relatively unknown country and the life in North Korea in terms of its foundation, political-economic system, personality cult, military build-up, industry, ruling ideology, thought control and disciplinization of its citizens, education of youth, gender relationship, relationship with South Korea, etc.
2) Since mid-1990s many thousands of North Koreans have crossed Korea-China border risking their lives. Most of them brave the long and arduous trek to reach South Korea via China and South East Asian countries. What has compelled them to leave family and relatives behind and what aspects of South Korea appeal to them most and how do they obtain such information? are most appealing to them and how do they obtain such information? What perils and dangers do the North Korean refugees, especially women encounter on the way to South Korea? What types of challenges do the NK refugees face once they enter South Korea?
